Canopy by Hilton: A Fusion of Local Culture and Innovative Design

The Canopy by Hilton hotels are known for their design inspiration drawn from the local culture of their location. The Canopy Chengdu City Center, located at Tianfu Square, is no exception. It incorporates local elements such as tea culture, Sichuan opera, spicy food, and architecture into its design. The result is a space that feels more like an art gallery than a hotel lobby, with a transparent pendant roof and a scholar chair hung on the wall in the lift lobby.

What sets this hotel apart is its innovative lighting design. The hotel uses energy-saving LED lights with a high color rendering index to display elements in their true color. The lights are dimmable, with warm white 2700K color temperature in the guestrooms for comfort, and 3000K in public areas like the linear lights wall washing the flashed brick feature wall, inspired by the local Chengdu's Jing Xiangzi.

The technical specifications of the lighting design include LED soft rope light, LED low voltage recessed, and LED down light, all with a color rendering index above 90. The lighting design project started in May 2017 in Chengdu, China, and the hotel had a soft opening in January 2019.

The design process was not without challenges. The location of the lighting fixtures was key to achieving the intended lighting effect. When conflicts arose during construction regarding the properties of the lighting fixtures, it was necessary to discuss with the customer and the contractor the possibilities to alter the lighting fixture to keep the effect as close as possible to the design intent.

The Canopy Chengdu City Center is a prime example of how innovative design and technology can enhance the guest experience. The hotel's unique lighting design not only serves a functional purpose but also highlights the local cultural elements, creating a comfortable and engaging environment for guests.

The design's success is evident in its recognition with the Silver A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2020. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The Canopy by Hilton's design certainly fits this description, showcasing a remarkable level of excellence and introducing positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
